Quick General Instructions on applying exterior stain

  1. Prepare the surface: Clean the surface you plan to stain thoroughly, removing any dirt, debris, or old finishes. Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding.

  2. Choose your stain: Select the type of stain that is appropriate for your project, considering the wood type, color, and level of protection desired.

  3. Apply the stain: Apply the stain using a brush, roller, or sprayer, following the manufacturer's instructions. Be sure to apply the stain evenly and work in small sections to avoid lap marks.

  4. Allow to penetrate: Let the stain penetrate the wood for the recommended amount of time. The longer you leave the stain on, the darker the color will be.

  5. Wipe off excess: After the recommended time, wipe off any excess stain with a clean cloth. Be sure to wipe in the direction of the wood grain to avoid streaks.

  6. Allow to dry: Allow the stain to dry completely before applying a second coat or any other finishes.

  7. Apply a topcoat (optional): If desired, apply a clear topcoat to protect the wood and enhance the color of the stain.

  8. Clean up: Clean up any tools or spills with soap and water or a recommended cleaner for the type of stain used.

Note: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety precautions when using exterior stains. Wear appropriate protective gear, such as gloves and eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area.
